BURNING UP

I never imagined it would come to this
waiting in
a line of minivans
with their engines running
exhaust puffing from tailpipes
in the cold
their dragon breath huffing
snaked in front
of the school
waiting…
waiting…
and then another minivan
arrives
slams brakes
shoves into line
all idling by the curb
idling…
idling…
waiting for release…
and on the radio
oil and gas prices going up
people without heat
some don’t eat
while the minivans
sit idling…
idling…
idling…
