Fireman’s Nightmare

no time to lace boots this black night
running into red heat
the neighbor’s house on fire
smoke choking
engine 34 on scene
ladder truck hoses claws of flame
raking the trees roof
collapsing no hope
everyone out even the dog
shivering slipping on ice
and the fire bellowed by
this wracking February storm
licks the next house and leaps
for the kill and one by one
the houses consumed
by that ravenous beast
until the men cool her down
and the carcasses are left
steaming and bleeding

The rhythm is intense and sporadic.

It creates a feeling of despair and lost hope.

    Awesome job.
